Skin Sagging

What is skin sagging?

Ageing is a natural process – embracing it is an important part of our health and wellness journey. However, saggy skin can sometimes make us look tired or sad, giving others the wrong impression of how we’re really feeling. While we can’t completely avoid saggy skin, there are treatments that can help. These options can lift sagging skin and reduce those negative expressions, all without needing surgery and with minimal downtime. The result is a refreshed and rested look, which contributes to looking healthy, happy and younger.

With strategic placement using only dermal filler, this 60-year-old woman looks less tired and has less sagging around her nose, mouth and jawline. We restored the volume in her cheeks which tightened her eye bags and lifted the skin tissue around her nose and mouth. With further filler placed around her mouth, lips and jaw, we were able to pull back some of the skin tissue to make a more defined jawline. Unfortunately, bruising can’t always be avoided but can be easily covered with make-up and resolved within a few days.

What causes skin to sag?

A number of things cause saggy skin. As we age, our skin produces less elastin and collagen, essential proteins that maintain its firmness and elasticity. Additionally, influences such as gravity, overall health, sun exposure, and fluctuations in weight can exacerbate this process. Over time, the supportive structures of our skin, including bones, muscles, and fat pads, also diminish, further contributing to sagging. These cumulative effects lead to a loss of skin tightness, creating a more fatigued and aged appearance.

How can I fix my saggy skin?

Dermal fillers, which are hyaluronic acid, can help lift the skin by restoring lost volume and supportive structures, while also smoothing out unwanted wrinkles. This treatment offers immediate results that can last from 6 to 12 months.

Sculptra is a different type of filler that boosts collagen production and gradually enhances skin firmness and elasticity over a couple of months. These effects can last up to two years.

Thread lifts involve placing dissolvable sutures under the skin to lift sagging fat pads. These sutures not only lift immediately but also stimulate collagen production as they dissolve, improving skin texture and firmness over time. As we can see in the patient below, the effect is immediate. Her nasolabial fold, jowls and neck sagging have all improved.

How do I know which treatment is best for me?

When you book in for a consultation, you will receive a comprehensive facial assessment to analyse your skin, facial structure and its unique needs. Then, we will create a treatment plan tailored specifically for you, to achieve optimal results.

Sometimes treatment plans can include a combination of skincare products and procedures. For instance, dermal fillers can provide instant volume and lift, while Sculptra works over time to build collagen. Paired together, they can achieve the best results.
